The global aviation industry has been rising exponentially. This exponential rise also driven the aviation industry to strive constantly to bring safety, reliability and customer satisfaction for each air travel. It is the time when the industry needs to look beyond the current ways to enhance resources, improve safety records and control costs. The aviation industry has always welcomed the use of the latest technological advancement to modernise business and improve customer satisfaction.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way, the industries work currently. AI is now entering the aviation industry as well. The industry has started to implement AI across various verticals. AI is still in its budding stages in the aviation industry. However, there has been a considerable progress made already. AI is a very advanced technology and it can be leveraged far beyond the current use.
The areas where AI is currently being used are:
- Passenger Identification: Facial recognition technology is being used to perform passenger verification and to match them to their luggage through kiosks. Delta Airlines, for example, is already testing the process for some time and have been able to receive successful results.
- Baggage Screening: Many airports have already been using AI-powered technologies which supports the baggage screening and tracking services. Future developments in this direction are already underway, where the AI-enabled machines will be able to manage to run the whole function without any human interaction.
- Customer Satisfaction: Many airlines are using chatbots for answering queries of the customers and even assisting them to book tickets online. United Airlines have partnered with Amazon to use Alexa for answering common customer queries.
- Auto-pilot Systems: It does not replace the entire job of the pilot but help to increase their efficiency. Pilots can now focus on core responsibilities. For example: AI assists pilots in knowing about weather conditions and make decisions accordingly.
Though AI is the best option to take aviation to the next level it is astonishing that aviation is still hesitant to embrace it completely. Roadblocks in this could be the huge investment required for reaping its benefits. However, it is not a concern for big commercial airlines like Emirates, Delta, American Airlines etc. They have already started investing in developing and implementing AI in their operations.
